Walking through the door into the intimate space which is Annapurna Tygervalley you are greeted by the tall owner and led to your seat. The space is fully occupied with dark wood furniture and ornate brass etched vases, exotic plants exploding over the rim. Yet a calm almost hypnotic ambiance remains prevalent with a whimsical Indian flair and decorations in rich tones of red, copper, wood and brass. Indian spices hit your nose and transforms this little part of Bellville in to a North Indian experience with all the trimmings.
We ordered the Lamb Vindaloo, butter chicken and korma lamb and on the owners suggestion we ordered a starter platter of samosas, tikka chicken and accompaniments of poppadoms and a variety of spicy dips. It was decided to have some authentic Indian beer to wash it all down.
The beers arrived and were swiftly followed by the starter. As with the main meal the starter was flavoured well without being overwhelmingly spicy. Distinct notes of Jeera, Cumin, Chili and Cardamom provided a subtle under tone to the curry. The meat was exceptionally moist and tender and easy to eat. Portion sizes are large enough and with sufficient sauce to be mopped up with the freshly made rotis and naan breads we ordered.
The Vindaloo was notoriously more spicy but delightfully manageable. Coriander, garlic, ginger and tomato harmoniously blend with the other ingredients setting the stage for the chili to shine.
Butter Chicken remains a firm favourite and it is no surprise that Butter Chicken Curry is in fact the most googled chicken recipe! It is among the best known and well-loved Indian foods all over the world. Its gravy can be made as hot or mild as you like so it suits most palates. Ours were mild and flavourful without compromising the authenticity. Butter Chicken is also commonly known as Murg Makhani. The powerful contributions delivered by the lime, chili and cardamom is countered by butter, yogurt and tomatoes while the chicken remains the star of the dish
I would certainly recommend Annapurna for a deliciously authentic North Indian meal.
