Marzipan make these tarts an absolute winner. You can make your own almond paste or buy ready made marzipan form baking shops, supermarkets or delis. Just a thin layer of marzipan placed on top of rolled out pastry, topped with sliced apple and baked to perfection. These tarts are fairy easy to prepare and make the perfect dessert when served with good quality vanilla ice cream.
If time is a little short, make use of store bought puff pastry instead of making the pastry in the recipe. It will taste just as good. I made a caramel-type sauce to drizzle over the tarts as they come out of the oven which pair incredibly well with baked apples and marzipan. It’s not entirely essential to serve the tarts with the caramel sauce, but you won’t regret the extra effort!
These tarts can be prepared up to three days in advance. Store them in the fridge and simply pop them into the oven for about 10 – 15 minutes before serving. If you’re making a large batch, they can either be frozen baked or unbaked for about three months. Allow the tarts to thaw then pop them into a hot oven to either crisp up or bake fully.
