You have to wonder what has taken Hollywood so long. Fiercely captivating characters like Gordon Ramsay, vibrantly entertaining individuals like Jamie Oliver, and sensually seductive personalities like Nigella Lawson are just a few examples of how diverse and enchanting chefs can be. Food is sexy, eating is sexy, and chefs in all their passion and rage can be sexy too. After all, sex does sell!
Chefs are indeed the new Hollywood stars! The massive growth in the popularity of cooking programmes and celebrity chef reality TV shows is one thing; but, an actual Hollywood movie about a chef’s adventures is a whole new venture. This has to be exciting for foodies all over the world. Forget the rock-star protagonists of the 90s, chefs are set to make a successful transition from television screens to silver screens.
This indie film explores the life and struggles of Chef Carl Casper who has a flaming passion for food and cooking, but feels chokingly restrained by his boss. The story begins with him working in the kitchen of a prominent restaurant in Los Angeles, where the restaurant owner becomes deeply dictatorial in terms of menu development. Feeling his creativity being greatly inhibited, he finds himself looking for a way out.
What ensues is Chef Carl Casper’s journey to reclaiming his individuality by means of quitting his job and embarking on a new adventure in Miami, involving the establishment of his own self-run Latin-American food truck. He is joined by a good friend during this tumultuous experience.
Of course a story wouldn’t be a good one without a bit of drama and romance. Chef Carl Casper faces the troubles of family life that comes with working with his Latin-American ex-wife in order to make the food truck a success, as well as maintaining a relationship with his young son. However, an on-and-off love interest in the form of the restaurant’s manageress throws a tiny spanner in the works.
The Star-Studded Cast of Chef
Although Chef is considered as an indie film, the cast is as impressive as any big-budget commercial Hollywood movie. Along with sexy food, come sexy actresses in the form of Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Vergara. Vergara is unique in this role since it’s hugely different from the ditzy, comedic character that she plays in the popular TV series, Modern Family. She resumes the role of Chef Carl Casper’s ex-wife, whilst Johansson plays his on-and-off love interest. Lucky chef!
The ladies shouldn’t feel left out though. Robert Downey, Jr joins this star-studded cast as one of Chef Carl Casper’s friends that assist him in sourcing and starting his food truck. Another well-known name includes Dustin Hoffman who plays the dictatorial restaurant owner. However, Jon Favreau has to be the most important name of all seeing as though he stars as the main character, as well as directed, co-produced and wrote the film.
Favreau has directed numerous films including Iron Man and Iron Man 2. He also appeared in Iron Man as Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey, Jr) loyal friend and driver. It seems as though Favreau and Downey, Jr seem to have a strong working relationship which sees them reunite in a number of films. He chose to work with Johansson again having also worked with her in Iron Man 2.
All chefs, cooks, and foodies should definitely watch Chef. Even if you just enjoy eating on the most basic level, Chef is bound to be an explosive assault on the senses. This is large scale food porn at its very best! However, most people will find an aspect of identification and inspiration from the movie’s themes of starting afresh, staying true to your destiny, and nurturing your creative soul.
