I bought two cook books at the the Good Food and Wine Show in Cape Town. Marco Pierre White’s 25th anniversary edition of White Heat. Obviously. And District 6 Huis Kombuis Food and Memory Cookbook. I’ve always been intrigued by traditional Cape Malay cooking. There’s a warmth and soul to it that’s difficult to describe. But when meeting two of the 23 contributors of the book, Moegemat Benjamin and Isobel Smith, as well as the book’s project coordinator, Tina Smith, it’s clear that the people behind the food are its source of incredible warmth. Ok, maybe all the spices too!
Huis Kombuis includes recipe submissions, stories, and photography from 23 original inhabitants of District Six. The majority of the recipes are images of actual embroidered pieces of cloth with the recipes intricately stitched upon. This book is going to be a winter winner, with beauties like crayfish curry, tripe and trotter stew, raisin bread, and other classics like green bean bredie, and bobotie. And it was only R385.
Other books available at the show included Sarah Graham’s new sugar, gluten, and carb conscious recipe collection, Wholesome; Reza Mahammad’s Indian Spice; and Andy Fenner’s new Meat Manifesto. I managed to purchase Meat Manifesto a few days before the show directly from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants in Woodstock. If you are a meat-eater, I highly recommend this book! It’s incredibly educational regarding quality of meat, and butchering of meat, but also includes an amazing array of delicious and diverse meat recipes that’ll get you salivating for sure.
The Good Food and Wine Show is a complete sensory overload, and definitely the most prestigious foodie event to have ever been hosted in South Africa. My advice to Joburg and Durban, where the event is taking place next, is to purchase a full weekend ticket. There’s just so much to do that you really need a couple of days to get through it all.
The Good Food and Wine Show will be in Joburg from 28 – 30 July, and Durban from 27 – 29 October. Check out http://www.goodfoodandwineshow.co.za/ for further details.
