Do you remember the old comic strip Blondie? It had a character by the name Dagwood Bumstead that used to make these enormous sandwiches with multiple layers of meat, cheese, other ingredients and slices of bread. This sandwich became famous as the dagwood and can still be found on many menus.
Dagwood sandwiches are the ultimate hunger busting meals – it’s not a sandwich for the faint of heart. Also, those who are counting carbohydrates, steer way clear of of even attempting to eat a dagwood. Your mind will explode at the amount of calories consumed with one such sandwich!
It’s that typical weekend kind of thing to prepare. This sandwich has many components, is so versatile and can be adjusted to enjoy all your favourite sandwich toppings all in one. In the nineties these sandwiches were very popular at take-away cafe’s and street-food vendors. You were able to find all kinds with various fillings, various sizes and various types of bread.
My recipe is a typical breakfast inspired dagwood, incorporating eggs, bacon, onions, cheese and beef burger patties. Don’t be frightened by the size of this sandwich – it’s supposed to be huge! Just embrace and enjoy.
