There’s something quite comforting about the smell of bread baking in the oven. A simple white loaf can be baked in no time which will please everyone around the breakfast table.
Place 500 g white bread flour in a large bowl and make a well on the center. Add 345 ml warm water, 1 egg yolk, 20 g melted butter, 15 ml honey, a large pinch of salt and half a sachet of instant yeast. Use a fork to whisk the wet ingredients together, drawing in some of the flour. Allow the mixture to stand for about 10 minutes to activate the yeast then use a wooden spoon to combine all the ingredients. Once a soft dough is formed, turn it out onto a floured work surface and knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it has a good, pliable stretch. Then place the dough back in the mixing bowl, cover and allow to rise until double in size.
Once doubled in size, knock the dough back and give it one more gentle knead. Place the dough in a buttered loaf tin and allow to rise for about 30 minutes then bake the loaf in a 200C preheated oven for about 30 minutes until firm and golden. Serve the loaf with your favourite toppings and spreads.
All these ingredients can also be added to your bread machine and baked according the the instruction manual.
