Cape Town – Josh Thirion may only be 11, but he’s already breaking records.
“You are never too young or old to make a difference,” says the youngster from Bellville.
Josh is the youngest published author in South Africa, the youngest recipient of a Gourmand Cookbook Award and on his way to becoming the youngest qualified chef in the world.
Earlier this year, his book Cook With Josh beat authors from around the world to the title “Best Children’s Cookbook in the World 2012” at the awards ceremony in Paris – and Josh already has another plan brewing.
On November 2, he plans to hold a massive cook-up at Bellville North Primary School to feed 750 children from schools and charities around the Cape.
“I was inspired when I was little and I saw my parents give food to poor people,” he said. “I want to let kids help me cook and then inspire them to help other kids.”
Schoolchildren are invited to help the young chef whip up boerewors rolls, chocolate clusters and healthy seed bars to be added to juice and fruit in food packs for charities such as the Saartjie Baartman Centre and Nazareth House.
The recipes for the day come from his own cookbook compilation. Josh selects recipes from his most trusted cookbooks, adds a personal twist and then illustrates them with games such as “spot the difference” and “join-the-dots”.
Watching MasterChef may have made Josh take cooking seriously, but he isn’t interested in seeing how he’d handle the heat on the show. “I’m already starting to make my journey a success,” he says. “I’ll go on MasterChef as a guest, but not to compete.”
He has his own cooking show potentially in the works, and a channel on YouTube. “I just want people to learn about cooking, and to see me teaching,” he says.
Not every 11-year-old has to stop attending school in order to make time for chef academy – and then take a week off that for photoshoots.
Josh has a new book in the oven, and this time its stuffed with post-dinner delights.
His treat of choice from Bake with Josh is Millionaire-in-Training chocolate cake – because, as he says, he’s not a millionaire yet.
But between Josh and his mom, they’re certain his zest for cooking, comics and cameras is a recipe for success. – Cape Argus
