The South African Breweries’ 10th Annual Intervarsity SAB Beer Brewing Challenge will pit 16 of South Africa’s top tertiary institutions against one another in a bid to win the sought-after accolade of best beer brewing students.
Micro-brewing teams and their respective brews go up against each other at the final of the competition to be held on Saturday, 2 September 2017 at SAB’s Cyril Ramaphosa World of Learning in Kyalami, Johannesburg.
Competing students will attempt to out-do defending champions, the University of Cape Town.
The competing universities in the SAB Beer Brewing Challenge 2017 challenge are:

- University of South Africa (UNISA)
- 1000 Hills Chef School
“South Africa’s tertiary student fraternity are at the cutting edge of experimentation and development within the beverage sector leading to a good fit as adopters into craft and beer.
They also play an important part in our drive to build a strong culture and passion for beer in our country as there has been established in other parts of the world.
“Providing students with the expert knowledge and skills in beer brewing by means of the SAB Intervarsity Brewing Challenge, will ensure that quality is never compromised and that South African craft beer products compete with the very best in the world,” says Anton Erasmus, SAB Trade Brewer.
Products brewed by the students in their institutions microbreweries will be judged under the following competition sponsored categories, each carrying a cash prize:
- Castle Best Bru (overall winner)
- Carling Black Label Lager Award (best lager)
- Redds Best Cider
- No. 3 Fransen Street Best Speciality Beer – beer with African ingredients
- Castle Milk Stout Winter Warmer
- SAB Best Label Design
- Spirit Award (WOB)
A new category has been included in the SAB Beer Brewing Challenge this year. The No. 3 Fransen Street Best Speciality Beer which recognises the best beer containing exclusively African ingredients. Of the category, Erasmus says, “Africa is seen as at the forefront of developing beer categorisation, sales volume and value. Following on from entrance of existing African ingredient beers into formal tasting competitions, the quality and unique flavour characteristics of these liquids has been brought into prominence. What better platform to experiment than including it into the competition.”
The SAB Beer Brewing Challenge is judged by some of the beer industry’s most prominent independent and accredited craft beer tasters.
SAB has over the years assisted universities in building the infrastructure of their microbreweries, where students brew, ferment, condition and package their beers prior to the final stages of the competition when they are tasted by independent and accredited craft beer tasters.
