Val De Vie Estate, situated just outside Paarl, is a country side inspired polo estate with a beautiful polo field and gorgeous houses all around the field. Lush lavender bushes, olive trees and indigenous shrubbery line walk ways and roads while every house is adorned with some type of window shutter, bringing the estate together in unison, even though each house differs from the next.
At the Polo Pavilion, Val De Vie hosts a market where residents and visitors to the estate can enjoy lovely live music, fresh local produce, authentic homemade fare and also jewellery, clothing and an array of home décor. Fresh juice, craft beer, local wines and sparkling wines are also available.
Recently, the market was held during an evening and visitors to the market could enjoy all the same treats in a large function hall. Long rows of tables with lovely black and white striped tablecloths welcomed an invited visitors to sit down, relax and mingle with friends and strangers while enjoying what the market has to offer.
While musicians perform live, the choice of what to eat and drink is tantalizing. From divine little homemade pies with all sorts of fillings to gorgeous biltong, handcrafted cheese and decadent little cakes, cupcakes, tarts and even macarons! Homemade rooibos teas, freshly squeezed juice combinations, and a fully stocked bar ensure that no one has even an inkling of a thirst.
There is also a Pongrácz and chocolate pairing which visitors can enjoy if they wish to do so. The pairing is only R50 per person and consists of three tastings.
The market takes place on various dates and it’s best to keep an eye on the Val De Vie website for details. If you’re not from the Paarl region, visiting the market might be a bit of a drive, but it’s well worth the effort. The setting is superb, what’s on offer is substantially rewarding and don’t forget about the exciting game of polo during the summer months.
