If you have an appetite for the spicy things in life and more so in your food, then you’re probably quite familiar with Bushman’s Chilli Co. sauces. Bushman’s have taken South Africa, parts of Europe and even India by storm with their extensive range of quality chilli sauces and condiments.
It all started 14 years ago when Eddie Cloete came back to South Africa from England with a mere 450 odd Pounds and purchased a second hand bakkie, a blender, one pot and a single gas burner with one gas bottle. Eddie cooked his first batch of chilli sauce and after dropping off a few bottles at selected restaurants as samples, orders came pouring in for more. Eddie still has his first pot he started with and it’s still used to this very day. Incidentally, he also has a bottle of the very batch of chilli sauce he cooked – he says it still tastes perfect.
The passion for chilli was born during Eddie’s time as a chef in Liverpool, where he and his mates would seek out the spiciest Chinese food after shifts. He experimented and developed his own recipe when back in South Africa. He worked from his mom’s kitchen at first, bottling and labelling by hand. When it came to the point where everything in their house was burning – even apple pies tasted of chilli, Eddie decided to set up his own little production company.
Eddie’s approach to producing good quality chilli sauces is an authentic one with a high level of integrity. Bottling and labelling are still completed by hand. Only the best quality raw ingredients are sourced for production with emphasis on locally grown ingredients. Artificial flavours, colours and preservatives are ingredients that you will most definitely not find in any Bushman’s Chilli Co. sauces. As Eddie puts it: “Drink wine – it’s good for you, but keep away from colourants and preservatives”.
When fresh chillies arrive from Montague, they are washed, pricked by hand, barreled in vinegar and allowed to age for up to 5 years, depending on what the chilli is used for. The vinegar used for aging comes from Cecil Vinegar Works in Strand and they receive 10 000 litres at a time. The aging process develops flavour and heat in the chillies – and it’s these attributes that contribute to the outstanding quality sauces and products that Bushman’s Chilli Co. is known and trusted for. “Always remember: the hotter, the better. In everything!” says Eddie.
Popular products include Hot Az Hell which is a fiery explosion of flavour and also one of their best sellers. Dynamite Chilli Sauce is an exclusive sauce made by combining very hot chilli and high quality chocolate to make a most exquisite sauce that can be used to accompany grilled meat, ice cream, fruit desserts or even in cocktails.
Another highly sought after product is the Bushman’s Pickled Jalapeno’s. They are supplied to establishments all over South Africa and make the most delicious chilli poppers. Eddie says that he’s currently working on producing pre-made chilli poppers that will be available on order in the near future. They also produce Sweet Chilli Mayonnaise which is highly popular and another best seller amongst their products.
The Bushman’s Spice shop and Deli opened up recently in West Coast Village Shopping Centre, where all their products are available to taste and purchase. You will also find great quality, organic ingredients as well as a few other eats and treats.
The Bushman’s brand has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and according to Eddie there’s still plenty to come from this hot company.
