Trifle is one of my favourite desserts ever! There’s so many aspects and ingredients that work together to make one divine dessert. It’s also one of those desserts that can be altered quite a bit and I love altering.
Trifle is an English dessert and there are numerous variations on it. Most common versions usually involve sponge cake soaked with some kind of liqueur, jelly, custard and whipped cream. Often glace fruit and nuts are also added. I don’t think that there are very strict rules when it comes to preparing trifle – the only aim is for a dessert assembled in layers.
I prepared trifle using red velvet cake, orange custard, blackberries and cinnamon cream. No rules, hey, only layers. It turned out pretty amazing! I decided on using orange and cinnamon with the red velvet, because you can’t really tell whether red velvet cake is supposed to be vanilla or chocolate. I melted some orange marmalade and brushed the cake quite generously with it. Lots of blackberries gave the dessert a fruity summer feel.
Be a bit more daring with your Christmas dessert this year. Try using something else than regular sponge cake and incorporate some fruit like raspberries or even add chocolate covered nuts. Make a trifle using your family’s favourite dessert ingredients.
