The Italian Club and Fratelli Palmieri restaurant
My evening at the The Italian Club and Fratelli Palmieri restaurant:
I have visited the Italian club several times with friends and for the most part for me it is the perfect place to wine, dine and dance the night away. The food is good, the group very professional and the atmosphere warm and inviting.
When you arrive at the club, the reception is warm and friendly, and after taking your booking, a waitron will show you to your table.
I have always found the service very professional and in the early to middle part of the evening your waitron will tend to keep a watchful but unobtrusive eye on their allotted tables. When food is ordered, it is usually brought to the table freshly cooked within half an hour depending on the demands on the kitchen. However, towards the latter part of the evening it becomes more difficult to draw your waitrons attention.
The food is nutritious and ample and is usually nicely cooked. However on my most recent visit, both myself and my guest were disappointed. For the first part, I had ordered the 12-14 Muscles and these usually come with a choice of starch. Having been deep in conversation at the time, I failed to notice that the waitress hadnt asked or suggested a starch although these options were clearly printed on the menu. Once the meal arrived and I realised the starch was missing I decided it was too late to order it anyway. Fortunately, as I had already had a starter, the mussels were sufficient.
On the second part, my guest had ordered the line fish which turned out to be Hake (apparently this is not usually caught on the line) but not to pursue the point too strictly my guest accepted this. However when the meal arrived it came only with a large helping of spinach and when my guest asked the waitress if there was any other veg or starch, she was told that was the only veg on offer.
However, these two minor disappointments didnt spoil an otherwise great evening and we danced the night away.
About the Italian club
The club is situated at 16 Donegal St Rugby.
The cuisine is mainly Mediterranean with a plentiful variety of dishes.
Friday nights are perhaps aimed at the younger generation where the music is louder and the beat is faster. It is also very popular and therefore tends to get very crowded so booking is essential to avoid disappointment. If youre an Elvis fan and would like to see the Man himself, then this is the evening for you.
Saturday nights are more family orientated and true to typical Italian custom, children are also welcome. Entertainment is provided by The Mix on these evenings and they play a whole variety of styles and tempos including Waltz, Jive, Reggea and Salsa etc. During the breaks there is a collection of house music especially for the younger generation and sometimes for the not so young too. The group are also happy to take requests and will naturally sing Birthday wishes when asked. Again, these nights are very popular so booking is essential.
Parking: Secure parking with ample spaces
The club is open every day except Mondays for bookings and functions etc.
