For the third time since 2011, Van Ryn’s has won the Best Brandy trophy at the Michelangelo Awards, which is this year celebrating its 20th anniversary as South Africa’s biggest wine and spirit competition.
Van Ryn’s 20 year old brandy was one of 1800 entries this year, including both local and international wines and spirits to be judged by a panel of acclaimed international experts. Entries were judged according to the categories to which they belonged and the international 100 point system was used.
Depending on the amount of points received, entries were awarded Platinum, Gran d’Or (double gold), Gold or silver medals. Overall, a total of 14 trophies were awarded, with the Best Brandy trophy awarded to the Van Ryn’s Collector’s Reserve 20 year old. Van Ryn’s Master Distiller, Marlene Bester, was particular proud considering it “an honour to come out on top when [she takes into consideration] the excellent quality potstill brandies which South Africa has to offer.”
Other notable medals for Distell premium brandies include Platinum for Richelieu 10 and a Gran d’Or for Oude Meester Souverein 18 year old and the Van Ryn’s Distiller’s Reserve 12 year old.
